Gyandum Shawl (Merino Wool + Eri Silk)
Gyandum Shawl (Merino Wool + Eri Silk)
The handwoven shawl features the beautiful ‘Tangka Gyandum’ – the circular, central medallion considered an auspicious symbol in Ladakh for happiness and prosperity. It’s commonly found carved in the entrance gates of monasteries and traditional Ladakhi houses. It’s also a common motif in the brocades, with roots in Tibet and China. The central medallion is flanked by two undulating vines bearing flower-like motifs. The motifs are rendered in the extra weft technique, a first-of-its-kind in Ladakh.
The yarns are mill-spun and dyed in Azo-free dyes; sourced from West Bengal (Woolmark Certified factory for Merino wool) and Assam (for Eri silk). The shawl is handwoven by women artisans of Ladakh. Merino wool and Eri silk lend a luxurious fluidity to the shawl.
